1단계 ‘Denial’ (부정의 시기)
의사의 진단이 잘못됐을 것이라고 생각하며 이 병원 저 병원 전전
"I feel fine."; "This can't be happening."'Not to me!"

2단계 ‘Anger’ (분노의 시기)
"Why me? It's not fair!" "No! No! How can you accept this!"

3단계 ‘Bargaining’(타협의 시기)
자식이 결혼할 때까지만… 가정을 함으로써 제한적이나 수용하는 모습
"Just let me live to see my children graduate" "I'll do anything, can't you stretch it out? A few more years."

4단계 ‘Depression’ (우울의 시기) - 슬픔과 침묵
"I'm so sad, why bother with anything?"; "I'm going to die . . . What's the point?"

5단계 ‘Acceptance’(수용의 시기) - 죽음을 받아드리는 시기
"It's going to be OK."; "I can't fight it, I may as well prepare for it."
